Gen Z’s Need for a “Sweet Treat”
I think it's cute how humans romanticize the idea of a sweet treat. What was once called desert, is now subjected to “a sweet treat.” Something we would all walk to a snowstorm to get, go out in the pouring rain to seek and even make a themed party all in favor of sweets.
A sweet treat can be anything, a warm latte on a somber Monday morning or a pint of Ben and Jerry's cherry garcia to watch the Bachelor, and be (may I add very) concerned about how yellow Joey’s eyes are. It doesn't have lines, a definition of what fits and what doesn’t (although I may have to expunge veggies out of that narrative), it can just be joyful to your taste buds.
I have been thinking about the phenomenon and I don’t believe it is really the flavor and act for eating the treat, but rather the experience in going to the store itself; roaming the isles, laughing as your friends dance in front of strangers, closing your eyes and picking a random flavor when they all look too good. It’s your hair being sopping wet from the journey over and not giving a single care. Perhaps you and your friend each get a savory and sweet snack to then split when you get back.
My point is, it creates shared memories. I would argue it's the first time in a long time that diet culture has been combated- foods are being seen as more than calories or even fuel- its being seen as a memory bearer, something that elicits joy through moments and taste. It’s something to look forward to, a reason to stay up a little later and laugh a little longer.
So, next time your friend invites you along for the drive to get a sweet treat, take the opportunity. Grab a spoon, a chair, a fork, a straw- and just exist in the present moment.
