How to Incorporate Vintage Finds Into Your Modern Wardrobe
There’s something thrilling about discovering a one-of-a-kind vintage piece in a thrift store. The allure of a unique piece combined with the nostalgia of retro fashion makes thrift finds a great addition to wardrobes.
As fast fashion dominates today’s clothing industry, turning to thrift stores for stylish pieces is not only more sustainable, but also can also elevate style. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect pair of vintage boots or a unique jacket, incorporating thrift finds into your style can elevate your look and express your individuality.
To start incorporating thrift finds into your wardrobe, begin with staple pieces. Look for classic items like denim jackets, sweaters, or simple silhouette dresses that can be dressed up or down with added accessories. Mixing and matching is also an essential part of elevating your style; combine vintage items with modern clothing to create a balanced look. Using layering to highlight textures and patterns is a great way to do this!
Another way to blend thrift finds into your style is by adding accessories, which can significantly elevate your outfit. Thrifting scarves, bags, or jewelry can add vintage flair to any outfit without overwhelming your look.
As you embark on your thrifting journey, consider visiting local vintage shops to find hidden gems. I had the opportunity to speak with Bel Moran (she/her), a manager at Moth Oddities in Minneapolis, who offered great insights into the world of thrifting.
“I was drawn to this job because I was sick of plastic clothes and the waste that it produces,” Moran said.
Moran emphasized the sustainability aspect that resonates with many vintage lovers, while also having a keen sense of current trends.
“Some people are following more modern trends like Y2k and the ‘90s, but some people are getting into ‘60s and ‘70s eras; it just depends on who’s shopping,” Moran said.
Her advice for those new to thrifting? “Instead of looking for specific items, just see what you’re drawn to in the shop… go in with an open mind,” Moran added. Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or a beginner, Moran encourages, “Just go for it and don’t be afraid to look weird!”
