The Fashion Figure Who Influences Everything You Wear: Princess Diana’s Best Moments
Remember when it was acceptable to wear a bright pink sparkly dress topped with a tiara to the grocery store - and strangers would actually compliment you on it? Unfortunately for many of us, those days are long gone. Sadly, it’s not quite socially acceptable to show up to a business meeting in a ballgown. And frankly, we’re probably too jaded to get the same joy out of it, thanks to life experiences that have “dimmed the magic” of being a princess. But whether we realize it or not, our fashion choices every day may still be inspired by one princess in particular.
During her time, Princess Diana’s impact on culture and society was so great that she was dubbed “the people’s princess.” Her bold style was so incredibly revolutionary that even today, almost 25 years after she passed, designers and consumers everywhere use her fashion as both influence and inspiration. The magic of Princess Diana’s fashion choices lies in the range of outfits she wore. From today’s athleisure to business casual - Diana had a unique ability to bring class, grace and spunk into every fit.
While the Princess’s style was quite iconic, it would be unfair to talk about her legacy in terms of just clothing. Diana was an avid humanitarian who brought her fearless style to her outreach and fundraising efforts. Topics that were seen as taboo during her time as a royal, such as HIV and Aids, leprosy, and homelesseness, were tackled by the princess and not in a superficial fashion. The consistency of her work brought issues to light that were often overlooked, and made a substantial impact in both the way people thought about these topics and the way they treated others who dealt with them. Diana’s ability to follow her intuition and take risks exemplifies possibly the most important part of her style - the ability to be unapologetically bold.
Below are some of my favorite Princess D moments. The range of these outfits demonstrates how diverse her fashion palate really was. Whether she was running out to the grocery store (I wish I looked that good going to Trader Joe’s) or dressing up in full glam, Diana always seemed to have the perfect look.
