A Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Closet

Happy Spring!🌼

Since it’s spring time, you know what that means: spring cleaning!

More specifically, I’m talking about spring closet cleaning. A lot of people have been changing and redesigning their wardrobes during quarantine, so here’s a little guide for those of you who also want to clean out your closet, but don't know where to start.

Step 1: Take out all of your clothes and dump them into a pile in front of you.

Yes, I do mean all of them. Having them all out in front of you helps you understand just how much clothing you actually have and it helps the cleaning process to have all of it in front of you.

Step 2: Sort them into piles.

Put the clothing into different piles by garments like short sleeve shirts, pants, shorts, pajamas, laundry day clothes, etc. If it’s still a bit overwhelming, splitting them by season may also help.

Now, choose a pile to start with and pick through the pieces and consider the following:

  • Do I like this article of clothing?

  • How often have I worn it?

  • How many outfits can I make with this?

  • Do I realistically think I will wear it again in the future?

  • Does this piece have sentimental value?

  • Does this fit my style/aesthetic/taste in clothing? (this a big one to keep in mind if you are also trying to change your style)

If the majority of your answers are no, then put the item into the discard pile. If your answers are mostly yes, then put it into your keep pile. If you’re not sure, put it in a maybe pile and come back to it later.

Step 3: Once you’re done with your chosen pile, pick another and continue the process, working your way through the rest of the piles.

Personally, I prefer to get this all done at once but if you need to take a break and stretch your legs and get some water then go right ahead! Don’t forget to take care of yourself!

Step 4: After I’m done going through all of my piles, I like to briefly go through a second time to double check if there are any pieces I’ve changed my mind about.

Go through your maybe piles during this time. When you finish your second round, you can do one more round if you still have pieces left in your maybe pile.

Step 5: Put your clothes away.

Once you’re satisfied with your selection of clothing that you want to keep, fold them up nicely and put your yes piles away. You can store your no pile away so you can get rid of them

Don’t know what to do with your no pile

Here’s what I suggest:

  • Donate to thrift stores and consignment shops like Goodwill, Turnstyle, etc.

  • Resell them on apps like Depop and Poshmark and get some profit out of this

  • Give them away to other people

  • Have a garage sale!

DO NOT THROW YOUR CLOTHES AWAY!

Most likely they are still in good condition and can still be worn even if you’re not the one wearing them. Plus, it’ll be a lot greener to pass it off to someone else that wants it than to just send it to an overflowing landfill!

I hope this helps. Happy spring cleaning! 🌼
