Graphic by Pamela Blaeser

Romantic comedies (rom-coms) are a well-loved genre in the movie industry. With witty, yet sappy love stories, rom-coms have been a big hit since the early 2000’s.

With equal parts comedy and emotion, a lighthearted, unique tone is created.

So, sit back, relax and get out your notes apps, because these rom-coms are sure to add a few ounces of romance and laughter into your movie nights.

1. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Starting off strong, the obvious first place goes to “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. The dynamic between the characters is funny yet does not detract from the romance of the movie.

This movie focuses on two characters who are coincidentally using each other to get ahead at work. The chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey is unbeatable.

2. Sweet Home Alabama

Reese Witherspoon plays a loveable, troublemaker in this rom-com. Throughout the movie, her character grapples with the decision to keep her new life in New York City or move back to small- town Alabama.

This movie will have you contemplating what you want her to ultimately decide. “Sweet Home Alabama” is highly underrated and I urge you to give it a watch.

3. 10 Things I Hate About You

“10 Things I Hate About You” is a rom-com classic. The movie stars Julia Stiles and Larisa Oleynik as two sisters with very different personalities and love lives. This rom-com also follows characters portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Heath Ledger.

4. 27 Dresses

“27 Dresses” is about a hopeless-romantic with an obsession with weddings. Jane (Katherine Heigl) has been a bridesmaid in 27 weddings and dreams of the day when she can finally be wearing a white dress down the aisle.

Jane meets Kevin (James Marsden) at one of the weddings and he is instantly captivated by her wedding obsession.

5. Love Actually

“Love Actually” is such an emotional and heartwarming rom-com. With its intricate web of characters and nostalgic holiday tone, this rom-com is a must-watch.

“Love actually is all around” is this movie's main premise. Following nine love stories set in London.

6. (500) Days of Summer

Some people may disagree if “(500) Days of Summer” should be considered a rom-com, but I think that it definitely should be due to the undeniable love story and comedy aspects of the movie. This movie follows Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a hopeless romantic who is reminiscing on his relationship with Summer (Zooey Deschanel).

It’s heartbreaking, funny and well-done.

7. The Proposal

“The Proposal” is a very cliche rom-com but that does not take away from its humor factor.

“The Proposal” stars Sandra Bullock as a demanding boss and Ryan Reynolds as her assistant, following the fabricated engagement between the two.

8. Your Place or Mine

“Your Place or Mine” is a relatively new movie having premiered in 2023. This rom-com follows the long-winded relationship between characters played by Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher.

I would recommend this movie if you are looking for a modern, light hearted rom-com.

9. Leap Year

“Leap Year” follows Anna (Amy Adams) and her journey to try to propose to her long-term boyfriend. During her journey through Ireland, she coincidentally meets Declan (Matthew Goode) who helps her on the trip.

10. Friends with Benefits

Finally, “Friends with Benefits” is the last addition to this list, starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. The title really encapsulates the premise of this movie better than I could, “Friends with Benefits”. That’s all.
