Best Twin Cities thrift stores for costume hunting

Halloween is right around the corner and if you’re anything like me you have yet to buy a costume. While online shopping for costume pieces saves time, it’s not the most fun or sustainable.

If you're looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon with friends while hunting down some amazing costume pieces and supporting local businesses, thrifting is a great solution! I have selected some of my top vintage shops around Minneapolis for all your Halloween costume needs.

Olio Vintage: 21 5th St NE, Minneapolis, MN

Relatively close to campus in the St. Anthony neighborhood, you will find Olio Vintage. Scattered throughout the store are racks of vintage Halloween pieces from flapper style dresses to Pierrot clown costume pieces.

If  you want to make a show stopping costume, this is the place to source from. Aside from the hand-selected vintage costumes, there are racks on racks of unique tops and bottoms with great size diversity from xs-xxl.

Moth Oddities: 13 5th St NE, Minneapolis, MN

Three doors down from Olio Vintage is Moth Oddities. This shop is a personal favorite for amazing layering pieces.

The selection of slip dresses in various styles, lengths, opacities and designs ensures you'll find what you're looking for. Have I mentioned the rack of Levi's Jeans in the center of the store all in amazing condition?

Want to be Rob from “Love Island”? They got overalls to match the vibe. If you’re in need of basic items or layering pieces, this should be your first stop!

Spend a little extra time and dig through their $10 bin where truly any and all clothing items can be found.

Corner Store Vintage: 900 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN

I hope you have a friend with a car because Corner Store Vintage is an absolute must-visit. This shop is a true gem, and I would love nothing more than to gatekeep– it but I suppose I’ll share it with you all.

If you need accessories, they have you covered: $10 sunglasses, a display case full of rings, necklaces, bracelets, satin and silk scarfs, unique leather, embellished belts and hats.

Want to know my favorite aspect of this shop? The backroom is dedicated to only denim jeans.

But, they don't only have denim and accessories. Hawaiian shirts, button-ups, t-shirts, a rack of satin tanks, slip dresses, body suits, two massive shelves for cowboy boots, a selection of leather and bomber jackets and so much more.

This is one of the best vintage shops for honest pricing; a satin slip marked as $40 at one store will be marked as $20 here.

Final Stop Vintage: 2431 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, MN

I hate to say it but if you want to find good vintage stores, you’ll have to trek out of the downtown area. Final Stop Vintage is a cozy shop in the Whittier neighborhood tucked between residential homes.

As this is a highly curated shop, the pricing can be on the hefty side but what you do buy– is of amazing quality. I bought a skirt from here for a Girl Scouts costume last year and I still wear it today.

They offer jackets, sweaters, slips and unique dresses. This store can be hit or miss, but it’s a good one to check out.

Buffalo Exchange: 2727 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, MN

Something is in the air when it comes to the Whittier neighborhood because they have some of the best thrift and vintage stores.

While not a curated vintage store, this thrift shop is guaranteed to have what you need.

The front half of the store has Halloween costumes, accessories, bags, hats and masks. The back half is neatly organized with jackets, shirts, dresses, pants, shoes, sweaters and truly everything in between.

There are plenty of dressing rooms to try on your finds. They also have a parking lot!

Whether you visit these shops for Halloween or for a relaxed shopping day, I guarantee you’ll find at least one item you love. As for Halloweekend, have fun, be smart, wear what you want and take plenty of pictures.
