New to campus? Put this on your bucket list
We’ve compiled a list of great eats, activities, and places around the UMN campus that are a must-visit for students who are new to campus.
Shuang Cheng’s lunch specials
Shuang Cheng is a Cantonese restaurant that has been a Dinkytown staple since 1990. Their lunch special is a wide range of entrees served with a side of egg rolls or cream cheese wontons for under $10.
2. Walk the Stone Arch Bridge and Northern Pacific Bridge Number 9 Loop
If you’re looking for a walk to get off campus, take this loop for a view of Minneapolis. Start on the East Bank, near the Education Sciences Building, and walk across the river along Gold Medal Park, and back across the Stone Arch Bridge to Dinkytown.
3. Bowling at Memorial Union
In the basement of the Memorial Union on campus, there’s a bowling alley that’s perfect for a wholesome night in. There are also bingo and trivia nights, drinks, and snacks available throughout the semester. Find the full schedule here.
4. Jazba
Jazba Entertainment, a student-run nonprofit organization, hosts a Bollywood dance competition at Northrop every spring, where teams from universities all over the country come together and perform. Each team acts out a story through their dance - past ones include a Bachelor theme and a Clue theme while dancing to a blend of traditional and contemporary music. It is one of the best nights of the year.
5. Mac ‘n’ Cheese pizza
Opinions vary from student to student on which is best, but both Mesa and Frank and Andrea Pizza have macaroni and cheese pizza that is perfect for a late night snack. Try both and decide for yourself which is better.
6. UMN Bookstore outdoor sale
Once a semester, the UMN Bookstore holds an apparel sale outside of the Union, perfect for updating your closet with Gopher gear. This semester’s Outdoor Sale takes place the week of Sept. 27 through Oct. 1.
7. Al’s Breakfast on game day
Al’s is one of Dinkytown’s oldest restaurants, serving made-from-scratch breakfast food since 1950. Prepare to wait in line for their famous counter seats, and bring cash to pay. We recommend the Wally Blues pancakes for a game day treat.
8. Burgers at Hideaway
Hideaway Cabin Bar is located by the river in St. Anthony Main, within walking distance from Dinkytown. They have fantastic burgers (both beef and vegetarian!) and a patio with a view of the Minneapolis skyline.
While these are some of our favorite local spots and traditions, there are many, many more to be discovered during your time on campus. If we missed one you think should be here, put it in the comments below!
