Keeping Up with Timothée: Movie Reviews
On my three year anniversary of the day I peaked in life (the day I met Timothée Chalamet), I decided to write the most important movie review of all of 2021’s movie reviews: Timothée Chalamet films! I shall preface this with the disclosure that I know nothing about what makes a film worthy of a good review; after all, I am a finance major. I will also, obviously, be extremely biased as I have never seen Timothée Chalamet do anything short of perfect. Nevertheless, this shall be the year of Timothée finally receiving his Oscar. Or, of course, he could develop a Dicaprio complex.
Dune (2021)
Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard of the new Dune movie. Dune is directed by Dennis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides. For some background, Dune was adapted from a sci-fi novel written in 1965 by Frank Herbert. The original Dune film came out in 1984, directed by David Lynch. This was back during a time where CGIs barely existed, so, right off the bat, 2021 Dune’s automatically tiers higher. In my opinion, Dune rocks. As a Timothée Chalamet stan, I very much appreciated seeing him in such an action-based role. There’s also something so comforting about seeing lil Tim in his own hero’s journey. Aw :). He also looked insanely dreamy the entire film. I am much more adept at watching rom-coms and comedies so the constant action and turmoil of Dune nearly took me by surprise. I saw Dune in theaters, which is a must. The combination of the action-packed plot with surround sound on the big screen kept me completely on the edge of my seat and, to be completely honest, gave me a lot of anxiety! But in a good way. I was admittedly very confused at the first 30 minutes of the movie with the introduction of tons of characters and planets but the plot itself is ultimately clear. The CGIs are super impressive and the execution of all facets of the film exceeded my expectations. Note: if you are looking to see the movie because you’re a huge Zendaya fan, I am sure you have already heard, but she is not a main character, yet. Her on screen exposure will be disappointing. Without giving anything away, stay tuned for Zendaya’s involvement in the rest of the Dune series. Additionally, it is to be expected pretty early on, but there are lots of tragedies in the movie; so, if you are anything like me, have your tissues close. Essentially, I am counting down the minutes until the second movie in the Dune series comes out.
The French Dispatch
This movie low-key has my heart. French Dispatch is one of many films directed by Wes Anderson. Anderson is known for his unique, eccentric films including, but not limited to, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Isle of Dogs. The French Dispatch definitely follows suit on the eccentric scale. The movie is essentially a set of short stories that go into the newspaper, which is being created throughout the movie, “The French Dispatch Magazine.” The movie features Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Frances McDormand, and a ton of other people I am not familiar with. Additionally, not only is Timothée Chalamet a character in one of the short stories, but so is Saoirse Ronan. My two Lady Bird lovers! The film is insanely quirky, goofy, and fast-paced. There are a lot of references, different languages, and innuendos so you must be attentive. I know, a difficult task for us Gen Zs. It's worth it though! The stories in the movie are thought provoking and creative and each one is more humorous than the next. The characters are so quickly developed and full of enticing personalities, and the relationships between them are even better. You’re sure to find “Story #2,” titled “Revisions to a Manifesto”, very relatable if you are anything like me: an intellect with a touch of narcissism that also happens to be a poetic (dramatic), politically-involved trailblazer, heavy on the stubborn with a slight touch of horny. These happen to be the character traits of Zeferelli, played by Timothée Chalamet. I know what you must be thinking: could this be any more perfect? Well, frankly no.
Dune and The French Dispatch are both still showing in theaters! Check out this article for more information on local theaters and movie deals offered for students:
