How to style comfy clothes this winter

Like a lot of people, I love the idea of looking effortlessly put together as I walk to class. However, as soon as the temperature hits 50 degrees and the sun stops rising before 7am, I am immediately allergic to wearing anything besides the warmest, cosiest clothes I can possibly find. This year, after the quarantine-induced matching sweatsuit craze, it has been especially difficult to find clothes that 1) I actually want to wear and 2) actually look nicer than pajamas. So, in case I’m not the only one feeling this way, I put together a list of ideas for styling comfy clothes.

1. Pair an oversized sweatshirt or sweater with straight leg pants, sneakers, jewelry, and a bag for a slightly elevated look. Jeans or trousers make this look neat instead of sloppy, and the addition of accessories helps dress any outfit up.

2. Take the athleisure route with joggers, sneakers, and a fitted top under a winter coat or bulkier outer layer.

3. For a look that’s slightly different from the traditional black leggings and sweatshirt of our high school days, consider choosing leggings that have some flare, like these from Aerie. If you’re on the fence about flared pants, a pair of platform shoes - whether it’s Converse or Doc Martens - can help elongate your legs and make any wide-cut pants work well.

4. Layer, layer, layer! Turtlenecks or lighter, close-fitting shirts under sweatshirts or sweaters can help keep you warm on the walk to class, allow you to cool off once you’re at your desk, and can dress up a basic crewneck. Cardigans with a shirt or tank top underneath can also help you switch it up while staying warm. Having a bright pop of color or a fun pattern under your top layer also helps brighten up any outfit.

5. Get creative with it - mix and match colors, patterns, and styles. You can easily thrift oversized sweaters, fleeces, and quarter-zips to save money and have some cozy options. Monochromatic looks are also a good way to appear more coordinated and put together.
